 Mobile Meals

The OLPH Junior High did their part to help out the needy by participating in Mobile Meals. For one day the Junior took over the routes normally done by volunteers in the Toledo Area. There are a combined 36 routes all over the Toledo area, and thanks to the volunteering of so many parents we were able to complete all the routes.

Not only is this day a rewarding day for the people receiving the meals, it is also a rewarding day for the Junior High students who participate. Year after year students comment on how much they enjoy this day, and how rewarding it is to give a smile and have a small conversation with some one who otherwise may not have the opportunity.

While this may be the only day out of the year that the Junior High will be able to do Mobile Meals together, many students have already talked about returning on their own time to volunteer. To some this may be just a small opportunity, but to those receiving meals it is much more than that. A simple smile could make some one's day, or week, or month, or even their year.

Toledo Feed The Poor, Food Banks

Unfortunately in our society today the number of people in poverty and in need of food is growing. OLPH Junior High students did their part to help those in need this Thanksgiving season. The students divided into three separate groups and did work at three different locations. Two of the groups of children went to local food banks and helped the volunteers and workers pack boxes and bags full of food to be delivered and picked up by those who need it. Our students did a tremendous job and packed enough food that hundreds of people will be able to have a meal this Thanksgiving.

The third group participated in Toledo's Annual Feed The Poor Luncheon held at the Erie St. Market. The group of students helped out before any guests arrived by setting up tables and place settings, carrying food and decorations from the trucks, and packed candy bags to be handed to each person. They also did their part during the luncheon as some helped pass out food, others worked the drink station, and some helped people carry their food back to their table. At the end of the day the students did their part in cleaning up.

Unfortunately the hunger problem cannot be solved in one day by a small group of people, but it takes everyone to do their part, step by step to begin solving this issue. The OLPH Junior High Service Learning groups were more than happy to do their part!

 MacQueen Apple Orchard

The junior high students recently spend the morning touring MacQueen Apple Orchard. They learned how the apples were grown and the different process that occur at MacQueen. Each student was able to pick four apples to take home with them, that they would use for activities in the afternoon with some of the younger grades.

After lunch the junior high interacted with K-3 on several different apple related activities. They cut apples open and observed the insides, before being able to eat the apple. They also test their thoughts in a sink or float activity. After all the activities were finished some junior high students lead all the under students in a short sing-a-long. It was a great day for all students, both young and old!
